Moving Tips For Seniors

( Quote ) Organization isn't about perfection. Its about efficiency, reducing stress and clutter, and improving your overall quality of life.
We all know what its like to have to move regardless of whether you are a senior moving to an assisted living home or not; its still stressful with a lot of planning ahead. Sometimes even with our best made plans somethings can fall through the cracks. Here is a breakdown of what needs to take place in order to be effective and efficient:
PLANNING

  • Making a to do list is a great start
  • Decide what your target move in date is
  • Coordinate with family, assisted living community, realtor, movers and any other type of service you may need based off your situation.
FLOOR PLAN

  • Take measurements of the new home and the furniture you will be taking with you.
  • Examine the practicality of your furniture
  • Select items that are of most sentimental value and also conducive with new space.
DOWNSIZING PROCESS

  • Do easy and obvious areas first
  • Use colored stickers and labels to identify what items go where
  • Decide what you want/need
  • Decide what to do with the things you don't want
DISPOSING OF UNWANTED ITEMS

  • Call charities in advance to arrange pick ups
  • Plan and hold and estate sale
UTILITY/ADDRESS CHANGES

  • If you are moving to an assisted living community you will need to make a list of the current utilities and services you have and begin having them shut off closer to your scheduled move out date.
  • Address change online or at the post office
PACKING

  • Separate packing from decision making
  • Pack items you need least, first
HIRING A MOVER

  • Small, local moving companies are usually best for local moves
  • Request the mover to visit your home and provide an estimate
  • Make sure the moving company is insured
MOVING DAY

  • Recruit family and friends to help
  • Keep valuables and medications with you
  • Plan on unpacking as much as possible to feel like your settled into your new space
  • Arrange for someone to help in days following the move.

Its been my experience that there are a lot of people out there who do not know that there are companies out there that can handle all of this for you. As a Realtor who specializes in helping seniors move to new assisted living communities we not only sell your house but do the following:

  • Assess your needs
  • Coordinate and execute all aspects of the move from sorting, estate sales/liquidation, clean up, packing, etc.
  • Help with the transition to the new community
  • AND YES....Sell your home.
  • Serving San Diego, Palm Springs, LA/Orange County and Santa Barbara
You do not have to do this alone or carry the burden and overwhelming feelings of the task at hand to start your new journey. Please let us help you.
Thank you in advance for allowing me to be of service.

All my best
